it begins like a spasm

 

diaphragm contracts

moves downward

lungs expand

chest cavity swells

breathe violently inhaled

rib cage forced

upward

outward

 

exchange

 

the sweet balance

diaphragm relaxes

moves upward

chest cavity reduced

eyes

slammed shut

hands raise

fist clinch

 

the event

a silent scream
